The Rapson Greenbelt Prefab Houses

Posted by Edward Dy on 18th July 2008

Ralph Rapson is a modernist architect that has managed this to reinterpret a design dating back 60 years ago with the 21st century prefab’s green panache. The idea behind the Rapson Greenbelt, which is a series of prefab homes, was taken form a 1945 design called Case Study #4. Back then this was Case Study #4 was part of the Case Study House Program of Arts & Architecture.

Today, the Rapson Greenbelt is part the modern home portfolio of the award-winning custom prefab homes provider WIELER.

The Greenbelt derived its name from the original 1,800 sq ft design’s distinct interior glass atrium. The 21st century Greenbelt comes in seven “models” between 576 and 2,660 square feet. In particular, the Greenbelt 1 is the design that comes closest to the original intention, evolving around the central glass atrium. This distinguished Rapson’s 1940s vision.

At 1,560 sq ft, Greenbelt 1 can have up to 3 bedrooms, where one of them can serve as a home office with its own entrance.

Greenbelt 1, just like the original, is a passive solar design that makes good use of natural heating, cooling and daylight.

The Agbar Tower: Lighting up the Sky

Opened in June 2005, the Torre Agbar or Agbar Tower is the creation of French architect Jean Nouvel and was inaugurated officially on September 16, 2005 by the Kings of Spain.

The Torre Agbar is a colored lighting and may be considered as one of the landmarks of Barcelona in the 21st century. The structure has more than 4,000 luminous devices use the LED technology, where 4,500, computer-controlled, L3 RGB lights serve to light up 32 floors of offices in the Agbar tower.

“This is not a tower, a skyscraper, in the American sense. It is a more an emergence, rising singularly in the center of a generally calm city. Unlike slender spires and bell towers that typically pierce the horizons of horizontal cities, this tower is a fluid mass that bursts through the ground like a geyser under permanent, calculated pressure,” said architect Jean Nouvel.

Hamburg’s An der Alster 1 Office Complex

Posted by Edward Dy on 17th July 2008

Designed by J. Mayer H Architects, the An der Alster 1 is a newly completed office complex in Hamburg, Germany, situated at the intersection between the downtown and the its urban landscape, in a gradual transition from city to nature.

A public park opposite the building continues the facade’s design strategy into the landscape. The “eyes” in the facade and park platforms are certainly unique and artistic.

The office space is a spatial layout related in some ways to the “eyes” theme. Generous spaces allow a myriad of office layout configurations in conjunction with the balconies and the climatically tempered outdoor “eyes” spaces.

The office building An der Alster 1 links both indoor and outdoor spaces to the public park just opposite the building, and has become an awesome landmark at the prestigious Aussenalster waterfront.

A Summer Glass House by Tham & Videgard Hansson Architects

Posted by Edward Dy on 17th July 2008

This beautiful architectural masterpiece is the creation of Tham & Videgard Hansson architects. This summer house in Stockholm archipelago utilized light building materials such as wood and glass to make it a perfect summer retreat house.

The plan’s layout is generated by the specifics of the site, the house sits on the flat surface between a couple of mountain rocks, facing the sun, the south as well as towards the sea.

The rooms of the house are located in the back, with the rest of the house standing out as an open platform crisscrossed by sliding glass.

Being organized in layers, the big rooms expand in open relationship towards the wooden deck outside the house. The zigzagged layout also serves to shield several outdoor spots from strong wind.

So, what would one’s impression be upon seeing this beautiful glass house for the first time? The large glass panes plus the interplay of light, reflections as well as mirror-like effects greatly contribute to the experience as nature, space and the horizon interact.
