Posted by Edward Dy on 29th August 2008

Exploring the Chianti region of Tuscany while immersing yourself in luxury is possible at the luxurious Villa Certaldo. This accommodation boasts of a huge swimming pool to sprawling grounds and all the amenities indoors.

Located off of a paved, lightly traveled country road, this luxury villa is near the town of Certaldo. Having a population of only about 15,000, Certaldo is a charming small town where you can spend the day shopping, picking up groceries or go exploring Certaldo Alta, the old medieval village.

In July, you can merrily get entangled with the town’s lively Renaissance festival, where you’ll find street artists, actors as well as musicians in the midst of medieval architecture! For sure you will have a great time exploring the Pretorio Palace as well as the magnificent Certaldo castle in the horizon. If you like museums, then the house of Giovanni Boccaccio is the place to go.

As you enter the gate of this historic 14th century villa you’ll find yourself in a garden filled with cypress, pine, and oak trees. A large swimming pool with terra cotta decking, while more than 35 lemon trees release their fragrance into the air. The garden offers a splendid view of the medieval town of San Gimignano.

The Lloyd’s Building is the home of the insurance institution Lloyd’s of London, and is located at One Lime Street, in the City of London, England.

Built between 1978 and 1986, this unique building was designed by architect Richard Rogers. The Lloyd’s Building is a modern building in all respect. It boasts of innovations like having its staircases, elevators, electrical power conduits as well as water pipes on the outside. This design leaves plenty of uncluttered space inside. The twelve glass elevators were the first ever in the UK.

The building has three main towers and three service towers surrounding a rectangular area in the center. The building’s focal point is the large Underwriting Room on the ground floor that houses the famous Lutine Bell. The Underwriting Room (simply called “the Room”) is overlooked by galleries, forming a 197-foot high atrium where sunlight naturally passes through a huge barrel-vaulted glass roof. The first four galleries open onto the atrium space, and are connected by escalators through the middle of the structure. The higher floors are glassed-in, and can only be reached through the external elevators.

The Quaint Palaces of Riviera di Levante

Posted by Edward Dy on 8th August 2008

Known for its beautiful scenery and stunningly beautiful historical houses, Portofino is Riviera di Levante’s pearl. It is the branch of the Ligurian Riviera on the eastern portion. A welcoming harbor during the Roman times, it served as a resting point for vessels that came from Rome to sail to Marseilles. Plinius the Elder aptly named it Portus Delphini because dolphins are plentiful in this area.

The village has survived for centuries and had kept with little, if ever, change. The tall houses that you see in the photographs has endured time; they are about three to four stories high, allowing anyone to have a panoramic view of the sea.

Portofino today is a village of yachts, fishing, expensive boutiques and most of all lovely villas!

The Superintendent of the Arts in Genoa is responsible for preserving the sea front, and make sure that not a single thing is changed.

You are not even allowed to change even the color or the decorations of the houses, you can’t even add a window. This is “preservation” to the max, and considering the historical value of the area, this prohibition is indeed a good thing.
