Located in Superior, Wisconsin, the Fairlawn Mansion was built for Martin Pattison to serve as his family home; he lived here with his spouse Grace Pattison as well as six children. A wealthy lumber and mining baron, Pattison envisioned Fairlawn as a fitting reward for his success. The building of the house started in 1889 and was completed about a couple of years later in 1891 for a total cost of $150,000, a huge amount at that time.

Built in the Queen Anne Victorian style of architecture, popular at that time, the mansion boasts of 42 rooms. The four story turret renders Fairlawn a usual landmark in the Harborview Parkway vicinity. The home also possesses a Queen Anne style porch, with its steeply gabled roof as well as the use of contrasting colors and textures on the exterior trim.

When Pattison died in 1918, Grace Pattison thereafter donated Fairlawn Mansion to the Superior Children’s Home and Refuge Association as shelter for orphans. The mansion has housed around 2000 children during the 42 years it served as children’s home, from 1920 to 1962.

In 1963 the City of Superior bought Fairlawn for $12,500. The mansion was due for demolition in accordance with Grace Pattison’s will following the closure of the Children’s Home; however, civic leaders as well as members of the Pattison family succeeded in saving Fairlawn by reason of a loophole in Grace Pattison’s will.

Since that time, Fairlawn Mansion served as the city’s museum. This house is an award winning Victorian house-museum, and stands today as a poignant reminder of Superior’s heritage.
