Known for its beautiful scenery and stunningly beautiful historical houses, Portofino is Riviera di Levante’s pearl. It is the branch of the Ligurian Riviera on the eastern portion. A welcoming harbor during the Roman times, it served as a resting point for vessels that came from Rome to sail to Marseilles. Plinius the Elder aptly named it Portus Delphini because dolphins are plentiful in this area.

The village has survived for centuries and had kept with little, if ever, change. The tall houses that you see in the photographs has endured time; they are about three to four stories high, allowing anyone to have a panoramic view of the sea.
Portofino today is a village of yachts, fishing, expensive boutiques and most of all lovely villas!

The Superintendent of the Arts in Genoa is responsible for preserving the sea front, and make sure that not a single thing is changed.
You are not even allowed to change even the color or the decorations of the houses, you can’t even add a window. This is “preservation” to the max, and considering the historical value of the area, this prohibition is indeed a good thing.
