The two spires on top of this building added to its total height. The building is mainly used for offices, but the top 48 floors house the five-star Le Royal Méridien Shanghai hotel. The Shimao International also has a nine-floor shopping mall.
In 2001 Shanghai Shimao Group bought Wan Xiang Group, the original developer of this building, and consequently the Shanghai Shimao Group named the building after itself.
